The Future Cities Project is an FP7 funded project which aims at unlocking the full potential of interdisciplinary research in urban technologies, as well as strengthening knowledge transfer activities in close cooperation with local and global industrial partners.

The project’s primary goal is to turn the city of Porto into an urban-scale living lab, where researchers, companies and start-ups can develop and test technologies, products and services, exploring such subjects as sustainable mobility, urban-scale sensing, safety and privacy, as well as quality of life for citizens and their families.
Work will be conducted across a multiplicity of disciplines, engaging not only engineers and computer scientists, but also psychologists, urban studies specialists, and social scientists. The University of Porto will conduct the research through various groups from the Engineering (FEUP), Psychology (FPCEUP) and Sciences (FCUP) faculties, amongst others.

ILIas

_____________________________________________________________________

SUMMARY

Due to the increasing frequencies of natural disasters as well as potential terrorist attacks, the protection of critical infrastructures from natural and man-made catastrophic events has become a central challenge. However, as the scale complexity and mutual interdependence these critical infrastructures grows, finding solutions becomes more and more challenging. Furthermore, new technology paradigms such as All-IP networks and Smart Grid functionality blur the classical domain boundaries and facilitate novel attack types.

The ILIas project will develop intelligent solutions for protecting critical infrastructures that provide electricity and telecommunication services to the general public. These solutions will be scalable and reconcile the need for fast automated reaction with manual supervision for highly critical decisions.

_____________________________________________________________________

SOLUTIONS

  • Protecting critical societal infrastructures through leading edge ICT
  • Developing a flexible peer-to-peer-based distributed management system to provide a robust and fault tolerant foundation for the network analysis and administration functionalities
  • Ensuring data availability and system control in case of different network failures until overall control can be re-established
  • Designing models for simulating attack scenarios and evaluating the efficiency of protection mechanisms in large-scale networks

Witty City

_____________________________________________________________________

SUMMARY

The aim of the Witty City programme is to provide people with better living and working environments and to create opportunities for enterprise to bring new products and services on the market. City and town administrations will play a key role in the project as they are central players in such areas as planning, procurement and the choice of energy sources.

There will be between three and six smart city pilot projects in different parts of Finland, which will allow programme partners to gain market experience and to test new solutions. The pilot projects will involve such areas as local energy, use of open data in traffic and the reduction of the carbon footprint.

The development work will take place in real-life environments and will be a joint effort between users, companies and the public sector. The focus will be on embedding ICT-based services in everyday situations, and on ensuring that the services are easy to use.

_____________________________________________________________________

SOLUTIONS

  • Enhancing the functionality of various aspects of quotidian urban life, such as mobility and energy use, through the embedding of ICT solutions and services
  • Aiding city and town administrations to develop their ICT knowledge pool and to gain an awareness of how they can integrate their services and functioning with the latest ICT technology
  • Providing the resources for Finnish enterprise to be at the leading edge in the emerging Smart City market

Sense Smart City

_____________________________________________________________________

SUMMARY

The aim of this project is to turn the small, northern municipality of Skellefteå into a Smart City – an urban space interconnected through sensor networks which manage the collection, measurement and communication of data and the allocation of resources. The end result will be the provision of more efficient, comprehensive and energy-aware services to Skellefteå’s citizens.

The project supports the collaboration of local SMEs with municipal authorities in researching innovative mobile systems technology and developing SmartCity products and services at the local university.

A platform will also be developed by the project team to manage collected sensor data and security, which will enhance existing Smart services and enable the provision of new ones.

_____________________________________________________________________

SOLUTIONS

  • Designing a new product which measures sewage flow so as to detect and report leaks and overflows.
  • Collaborating with local SME’s on other Smart prototypes.
  • Constructing a “Sense Smart City platform” to store collected sensor data and security in the cloud and host new applications utilising the gathered data.
