SmartSociety

_____________________________________________________________________

SUMMARY

Society is progressively moving towards a socio-technical ecosystem in which the physical and virtual dimensions of life are more and more intertwined and where people interaction often takes place with or mediated by machines. The scale at which this is happening and the differences in culture, language and interests makes the problem of establishing effective communication and coordinated action increasingly challenging.

So far, attention has been mainly devoted to collective adaptive systems (CAS) that provide or impose some form of harmonization or lightweight coordination of meaning and actions where machines do most of the computation and humans are at the periphery and only act as consumers. In these settings, collectives are generally homogeneous and are orchestrated to achieve a common global goal where knowledge adaptation only takes place locally to a single unit.

The SmartSocity project’s goal is to move towards a hybrid system where people and machines work in tandem to build a smarter society. The project envisions a new generation of CAS centred on the two foundational notions of compositionality and diversity.

To meet this ambitious goal these, the new new CAS will be hybrid, distributed, open and large scale where multitudes of heterogeneous peers producing and handling massive amounts of data can join/leave dynamically following unpredictable patterns with no central coordination and interoperating at different spatial and temporal scales.

_____________________________________________________________________

SOLUTIONS

  • Building the next generation of collective adaptive systems (CASs) where humans and machines work synergetically
  • Bridging the semantic gap between man and machine
  • Implementing a continuous, unlimited cycle within the CASs in which data is sensed, interpreted, shared, elaborated and acted upon
  • Identifying the right incentive schemes and privacy levels for CASs so that they can assist humans in their everyday activities, cope with the diversity of the world in terms of language, knowledge and personal experience and work with possibly imperfect information.

OPENi

_____________________________________________________________________

SUMMARY

The OPENi project aims to deliver a consumer-centric, open source mobile cloud applications solution that will be the catalyst for mobile application innovation advancement. The platform will incorporate an open framework that will be capable of interoperating with any cloud-based service, abstracting the integration challenges to a single open standard without losing any service features. It will be a single platform that will inherently promote innovation by offering application developers an advanced framework in which to design and build complex applications involving the combinations of independent cloud-based services.

A visions central to OPENi’s mission is to reduce the fragmentation and duplication of citizens’ data. OPENi will provide application users with a single location to store and control their personal data. This personal cloudlet will enable consumers to manage what information is available to each application and for what purpose. It will be a single authorative source for their personal data and content. The cloudlet will empower application consumers to remain in control of their data – it will be inherently secure and trustworthy and as an open technology, validated by the open source community, consumers will be assured their data is not being used without their consent.

The combination of the open API and cloudlet concept creates a single platform of user data and service connectivity making OPENi a very powerful and beneficial platform for consumers, application developers and service providers.

_____________________________________________________________________

SOLUTIONS

  • Defining and delivering a set of open source APIs that will allow applications (both native and web) to connect seamlessly to a broad spectrum of existing heterogeneous cloud-based services
  • Building key technological enablers to ensure the practical applicability and efficient use of the OPENi APIs such as: a web based security and authorization framework that will satisfy the service provider’s requirements and a context broker that will enable the sharing of context information between applications.
  • Delivering an open source platform that will allow application consumers to create, deploy and manage their personal space in the cloud (cloudlet); a novel entity that will be linked to its user’s identity over the web in a manner analogous to a social network profile
  • Enabling application consumers to share and distribute their data across their applications.
Promoting the OPENi functionalities and capabilities by implementing innovative usage scenarios that exercise the full potential of OPENi.
  • Ensuring the OPENi environment maintains a low barrier to entry for application developers and service providers.
  • Initiating and participating in related standardisation activities to ensure wide and long term adoption of the delivered specifications and technologies.

INDENICA

_____________________________________________________________________

SUMMARY

The aim of service-centric computing is to provide a globally integrated environment in which a large number of loosely coupled services can cooperate and form a service ecosystem. Already today, this has led to a plethora of service platforms that are available for use by applications. This high degree of heterogeneity is necessary as such service platforms have to fulfill completely different functional and non-functional requirements. Nevertheless, this heterogeneity results in the following fragmentation of service platforms in terms of Quality of Service, interface design and technological basis.

All three forms of fragmentation are today major stumbling blocks for the successful development of service-based applications and hinder the emergence of a full service ecosystem.

In this context, the INDENICA project aims to develop virtual, domain-specific platforms which will be fully open and interoperable. The project will provide methods, architectures, components, tools and assets for reuse-based creation of the adapted platforms. Effectively, INDENICA will research on a product line for the development of domain-specific platforms that are interoperable by design. Members of the product line (i.e., platforms) can be modified after deployment, thus providing capabilities to make decisions at runtime that are currently made in the design process.

_____________________________________________________________________

SOLUTIONS

  • Simplifying the overall complexity of service platform development caused by the mentioned fragmentation.
  • Providing methods, architectures and tools that support the development of context and domain-specific platforms along with the services.
  • Supporting platform convergence and interoperability to avoid the increased dependency on external service and platform vendors.
  • Fostering a common basis for families of platforms which integrate system management and interoperability capabilities right from the start.
  • Producing a reusable infrastructure for platform development and support the automatic deployment and the monitoring, governance, and adaptation of services in a Virtual Service Platform.
