Coordinating European Future Internet Research

Joint NEM-NETWORLD2020 working group formed

Two of the official EU Technology Platforms (ETP) for Horizon 2020, NEM and Networld2020 , have joined forces together to form a joint Working Group to better understand the terms of reference of each other in order to setup consistent common goals and synergies in relation towards their research agendas.

The NEM ETP covers all aspects of the content domain, which need networks to be delivered to end users (broadcast, unicast, multicast).

Conversely, the Networld2020 ETP covers all aspects of the future network domain (wired and wireless), which need content to be utilised.

Therefore, the working group members will work together on identifying the taxonomies, requirements and skill sets of the stakeholders in both of the platforms together in order to better understand each other and enabling more fruitful synergies.

A first face to face meeting of the joint working group was held on 17th February, 2015, hosted by Orange Labs in Paris. At this successful full day meeting, the working group have identified 12 key parameters that should be shared between the service/network providers and the content providers.

This result is being presented at the next Networld2020 and NEM Steering boards during the week starting 23rd February, 2015, with a view to widen the participants of the Working Group’s contributors. The approach decided will be to find one leader for each parameter in order to share the workload with the objective for each parameter to start off with a short description and definition, and for each to establish a technical feasibility, including a cost/benefit analysis of implementation, interoperability and standards synchronization, and a business value and impact for each parameter.

The first deliverable would be a position paper based on the above. It was also decided to invite the NESSi ETP and Big Data PPP (storage, search, analytics) to join forces with the joint NEM/Networld2020 working group.
