SUMMARY
This project aims to study theoretical aspects of networked digital communications. It will focus on information-theoretic considerations, to investigate both new fundamental theoretical results and also propose designs and guidelines inspired by these results. The suggested research is motivated by wireless sensor and ad-hoc networking, and by future cellular wireless systems with advanced cooperation between cells (relaying and coordinated multi-point transmission). However the principles are general and will find applications also in related fields, in particular in the evolution of the (wired and wireless) Internet.

SOLUTIONS
- Contributing to the forefront of basic/theoretical research in the area, by publishing in high-quality international (IEEE) conferences and journals, and by producing top-quality Ph.D. graduates in the field.
- Emphasising the general importance of wireless systems and communication networks to Swedish industry, and the particular importance of providing the Stockholm area with well-qualified researchers in communications engineering.
- Making significant progress on solving open problems related to transmission of information in lossy networks.
- Advancing knowledge in the field of lossy networks in the areas of new (bounds on) capacity regions, new coding schemes, novel cooperation protocols, and contributions to general information-theoretic performance characterizations and scaling laws.
