SUMMARY

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are a key enabling technology in the domain of the “Internet of Things”. However, there are only a few radio bands in which these devices communicate and, hence, the spectrum can easily become overcrowded. Thus, as WSNs proliferate, ensuring their robustness as communications systems becomes increasingly problematic.

The WALNUT project (Wireless Ad-hoc Links using robust Noise-based Ultra-wideband Transmission) intends to focus on providing solutions to the communication robustness problem while maintaining or even reducing power consumption. The team propose to explore wideband modulation so as to enable robust wireless communication in a crowded, interference-rich environment at low-power usage specifications.

SOLUTIONS

  • Improving the robustness of Wireless Sensor Network communications through creating sufficient space on the radio spectrum

  • Using spread spectrum techniques to achieve wide-band modulation

  • Tackling energy-use issues arising from the use of wide-band modulation through employing a noise-based ultra-wide-band transmission technique
