SUMMARY
The vision of SOCIETIES is to develop a complete, integrated Community Smart Space (CSS), which extends pervasive systems beyond the individual to dynamic communities of users. The project team aims to investigate and address the gap between pervasive and social computing through designing, implementing and evaluating an open, scalable service architecture and platform for CSSs.
CSSs are the building blocks for enabling pervasive computing in social communities. CSSs constitute the bridge between a user’s context (devices, sensors etc.) and the social community the user is a part of. A CSS is inherently context-aware, self-organising, self-improving and capable of pro-active behaviour aiming to optimise the pervasive experience of an entire community. In addition to the resources controlled by its individual owner, a CSS may also provide public access to its devices, services and resources.

SOLUTIONS
-
Researching how a CSS can support communities with intelligent, adaptive and collaborative features
-
Providing mechanisms for managing multiple communities including community hierarchies and networks of communities
-
Identifying the functionality necessary to support collaborative communities of arbitrary sizes
-
Supporting the dynamic creation and membership of a community from users’ CSSs (including their services, devices and resources)
-
Addressing all the community needs of a single individual and facilitating interactions amongst the personal smart spaces of the community members to which that individual belongs
-
Providing a basis for the deployment of autonomous, context-aware, self-evolving communities to support collaboration in a variety of fields
