Saving Energy in the ICT Infrastructure

_____________________________________________________________________

SUMMARY

Recent changes in pricing policy by hosting providers and data centres mean that end users are now being charged for power consumption rather than occupation of space. This new development, combined with the ever-present need to develop green ICT has created a new challenge for server end users. The main goal of this project is to reduce the energy consumption of server-based operations so as to lower costs and to reduce negative environmental impact.

SOLUTIONS

  • Developing a multi-layer approach to reducing server power consumption
  • Finding ways to save money without losing consistency at the physical / virtual cluster, hardware, operating system and application layer
  • Ensuring that these energy reductions in the rest of the data center (cooling, ventilation …) has an effect
