The research in “Content Based Query Concept for Exploration and Discovery of Information in Earth Observation and Medical Libraries” – CONCEDE project aims at enhancing the functionalities of the Earth Observation (EO) Payload Ground Segment systems and the next-generation services for an enhanced data realisation.
With an exponential increase of available data volume, the need for a new generation of data mining tools and knowledge discovery in databases concepts becomes emergent. CONCEDE pursues to develop a complete and embracive theoretical and applicative framework that will allow for a compendious exploration of heterogeneous data resources, resulting in the discovery of semantic information hidden in image libraries. A demonstrator will be generated in order to validate and evaluate the capabilities of the proposed concept. The project’s objectives envisage three main contribution: to European Space Agency (ESA) research activities, to new applications solutions development and to scientifically development.

]]> http://www.cefims.eu/2014/08/concede/feed/ 0Information and communications technology can increase infrastructure usage, improve safety, enhance travellers access to information and reduce transportation times as well as fuel consumption. Therefore advanced Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) are becoming increasingly widespread as a mean of optimizing transit operations and infrastructure usage. However, models currently used to describe and predict passengers lows across the network do not take adequately into consideration the effects brought about by ITS on transit operations and on user behavior. Hence, transport planning based onto ITS is not completely meaningful and does not exploit to the full the amount of high quality data made availabl. This deficiency can delay the realization of the benefits of enhanced passenger information provision.
The project aims to gathers together researchers in the field of transport and urban and regional planning, transport operators and authorities, consultancies and software developers. The main goal is to exchange knowledge and research in the field of transit assignment models, tailored to the era of Intelligent Transport Systems.

In the near future, genomic medicine will be fully integrated in the care of patients and genomic data will be part of the medical information of each of us. If this scenario impacts positively on our lives (eg., Diagnosis genomic allow to treat individuals according to personalized therapies), at the same time several issues are raised which need to be addressed such as the way in which genomic data are modeled and queried, or the need to protect the privacy of sensitive information. In this project, the research team will focus on aspects of security and privacy, the key factors for successful integration of genomics in healthcare systems. How do we ensure that our sensitive genomic data are adequately protected? How to ensure that the privacy of individuals who participate in medical studies to be preserved? How to assure that only authorized parties to access genomic data? UNIMI will answer these and other questions by developing innovative solutions that address the issues of security and privacy related to the storage, collection, dissemination and use of genomic data.

]]> http://www.cefims.eu/2014/08/9139/feed/ 0Control system paradigms, based on Internet of Things technology, are an essential part of modern software systems. In the FReSCo project, a model will be developed for future resilient control systems capable of measuring a wide set of observables, including inexact ones derived from the environment. Because of the differences in the resources, protocols, and devices, inexact observables are incomparable with rigorous control system data. Hence, it is not easy to build systems which can incorporate such data. It is therefore necessary to derive a method for identifying and representing relevant context, as well as proposing a method which will describe the relation between the raw observables and the data.

The academic project participants address this objective in collaboration with case partners working in healthcare, finance, and sustainability. Their analysis of data is essential for the efficient use of resources and has direct consequences for businesses and society, for instance, by improving the resource efficiency of the healthcare sector, analyzing resource expenditure in companies, and helping to address climate change.
