The announcement was made by the European Commission’s Director of DG INFSO, Mario Campolargo, during the closing plenary of Aalborg’s FIA event.

A number of the EARTH project consortium were in Aalborg to accept the prize (see above picture). The project has developed energy efficiency solutions for wireless communication networks.

Chosen as the clear winner during the Award competition, EARTH received much commendation from the Award’s distinguished Judging Panel. Comments included:

“…Well defined, organized, described and presented project… has strong scientific and technological impact.”

“…well-run project attacking important area of energy efficiency in an important & rapidly growing technological area”

“The potential impact is very big and relevant, and the obtained results are convincing enough to be quite confident about the success of this approach”

Though EARTH doesn’t officially finish until June, 2012, industrial and SME partners have already started to transfer the project’s results into real products for the multi-billion euro global market for 4G products. In particular, they have optimised the energy use of 4G/LTE (Long-Term Evolution) base stations, which account for the highest energy consumption in the mobile network.
